本日、生徒と教員、全校をあげて地域貢献活動を行いました。普段お世話になっている地域の方々に貢献できることは何かと考え、清掃活動を実施しました。

本校がある八王子市上川町は秋川街道沿いにあり、街道を中心に小さい路地も併せて分担して清掃活動に取り組みました。一見するとゴミがないようなところでも、注意してみるとゴミを見つけることができました。たばこの吸い殻から、ペットボトルなどの小さいゴミから、中にはタイヤやスーツケースなどの不法投棄もありました。地域の方々は街道沿いに花を植えて綺麗にしていることから、この清掃活動で本校生徒としても地域に貢献できたのではないかと思います。また、校内では普段清掃できない場所の清掃も行いました。

清掃活動の後は、清掃活動を通して、ゴミの傾向にはどのようなものがあるのか、なぜそのような傾向があるのか、を考えてもらう機会を設けました。多くの生徒がやりがいをもって取り組み、地域を愛する心が育まれたと感じました。環境美化への意識を高め、普段の自らのゴミ捨て等に少しでも注意を払ってもらえるようになると良いと思います。

「ゴミの傾向として多かったものは、ペットボトルや空き缶、たばこの吸い殻といった持ち運びできる小さいサイズのものが殆どだったという点です。これは、どの地域においてもよく見かける類のごみであるため、上川地区もその例に漏れず多かったのだと思います。また、道中でゴミを捨てられる場所などもないため、そのまま捨てて行ってしまう人が多いのではないかとも思いました。次に、不法投棄されたものは、目について多く見えなかったということです。同じ東京都の中でも、例えば都心方面とは比べ物にならない程、全体的にゴミの量は少なく、地域の方々の常日頃からの保全に対する意識の高さがうかがえるようでした。」

「ボランティア活動は人の目につかないけど地域にとても役立っている活動だと思いました。褒められるためにやるのではなく、やって当たり前にできるようにしていきたいです。」

The much anticipated “Golden week” is upon us. For parents, teachers,
students, and all other walks of life this is a week that is much looked forward  to.
This friendly neighbourhood Australian is still surprised that there’s almost a
whole week of public holidays, and they call “Australia” the “lucky country”.
For the students and teachers of Teikyo Hachioji Junior & Senior Highschool,
today (Monday, May 2nd) was a chance to do something for the local community
of Kawaguchi, Hachioji. Each senior high-school student, along with their home-
room teachers, participated in a ‘spring clean’ of the school, or a clean-up of
the public grounds around the school.
I was lucky enough to join one of the second year senior high-school classes.
Our clean-up area was about a twenty minute walk north of the school, and we
spent about an hour picking up various items of rubbish.
The time flew by. The students graciously greeted local residents, playfully
walked around picking up various bits of old plastic and bottles, and some were
either fascinated by or feared the recently emerged insects of spring. One
student even found an abandoned old suitcase!
It was certainly an interesting experience which hopefully the residence of
Kawaguchi appreciated, I certainly did being a Kawaguchi resident myself.
